Title A name given to the resource Digital Projects Project Title Project Title September 11 Digital Archive: Saving America's Treasures Description In the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks, the staff at the Center for History and New Media (CHNM) at George Mason University and the American Social History Project (ASHP) at the City University of New York Graduate Center CHNM and ASHP built a rough and ready web portal, the September 11 Digital Archive to capture the responses to and materials produced in the wake of those terrible events. At 150,000 items, the Archive stands as the world's largest public collection of born-digital materials related to the events of September 11. Cutting edge at its launch nearly ten years ago, the Archive now is showing its age. Given the significance and fragile state of the Archive, we propose transferring this groundbreaking digital collection to a stable, standardized, up-to-date archival system that will insure the long-term preservation of these materials and guarantee these primary sources of contemporary history will be accessible in the coming decades. Title A name given to the resource Digital Projects Project Description The goal of Making the History of 1989 is to make visible to teachers and students the events of 1989 and the processes by which historians turn those events into sometimes conflicting narratives, thereby providing students with the sources and intellectual tools they need to be history makers rather than passive consumers of the past. To this end, Making the History of 1989 will create a free website with three key features: a substantial collection of high quality primary sources along with guidance on how to use those sources critically and tools for annotating and organizing the sources; a set of multimedia interviews that make visible the processes by which historians transform events and sources into historical narratives; and a body of teaching materials that give teachers direct guidance on how to teach about 1989 in ways that make “history making” visible and vivid. Deliverables 1. 300 primary sources in multiple media formats dealing with the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, along with an introductory essay that provides students and teachers with a concise narrative of the central events that led up to the collapse of communism and its aftermath, and tools for analyzing and annotating these sources. 2. Historians Making History: Multimedia interviews with four scholars on how they use a range of sources (official communist documents, government propaganda, opposition polemics, and media coverage), how interpretations of 1989 changed after the communist era archives opened, and how their own interpretations (and those of their colleagues) have been shaped by evolving circumstances. 3. Putting History Making in the Classroom: six Teaching Modules that provide historical context, teaching tools, and strategies for sets of primary sources drawn from the website’s database and ten Teaching Case Studies by experienced scholars and teachers that model strategies for teaching the history of 1989 with primary sources. But students and teachers often lack the skills to make sense of historical objects, to analyze them closely and tease out their larger historical significance. Many students aren’t even in a position to visit a museum, making it even more difficult for them to engage in close analysis of historical objects. Fifty website reviews written by historians that emphasize valuable resources for studying and teaching the history of childhood and youth in U.S., European, and world history as well as strategies for using those resources and direct links to select documents. 3. Ten thematic teaching packets written by historians that provide historical context, teaching tools, and strategies for teaching with sets of primary sources drawn from the Primary Source Database. 4. Twenty essays written by experienced scholars and teachers that model strategies for teaching the history of childhood and youth with primary sources.
